Inspired by Winchester Cathedral

By Matt Hilton, 05/10/1972
Winchester Cathedral, Hampshire, England I wrote this poem in 1972, some 5 years before committing my life to Christ. I was in Winchester, county Hampshire, in the grounds of the cathedral. Although I was not a Christian at the time, and had no interest in Christianity, yet there was something about the cathedral that inspired me, that made me feel safe and secure. I would go in from time to time and just sit and be in the presence of - whatever the presence was inside that great building. I didn't know what it was then, although I do know now. It was the presence of God, permeating the very walls through centuries of prayer and worship. I have no doubt that that atmosphere of holiness had a significant impact on my soul, however ignorant I was of it at the time.

steeper still the morning shadows edge
their way through paper windows
pray for silence at the holy hour
lift your eyes to drink the light
feel the sweetness
hear the warmth
taste the music
of the dawning
open hands to
let the saviour in
many-coloured is the morning sky
bright
and brighter still
his wisdom eye

your Lord is watching

take his hand and let him lead you
thru the peaceful pastures
of his kingdom
thru the tearless forests
of his universe domain
the air is full of singing
full of joy
it is the morning

don't let nite-time take you
by surprise
