A Dawn Like This

By Matt Hilton, 01/11/2000
Jesus victorious at dawn This poem was written in the run-up to Christmas 2000. I was acutely conscious of the contrast between the pure and perfect love of God on the one hand and the sometimes gross, even crass, disrespect for God among the people that I know on the other hand. As humans we have the tendency to create God in our own image - be that a religious or an irreligious image. Any such imagination is an insult to His uniqueness and perfection, but the bottom line is that He is willing, ready, and eager to forgive us and move on, no matter how repugnant we've been. That's good news.

A Dawn Like This

A dawn like this has never been,
A sky so clear, a light so pure.
No earthly eye has ever seen
Such glory; but this time for sure
The Sun of Righteousness is come
To bathe in warmth the heart grown numb.

This child that lies atop the straw,
The mystery guest of careless beasts,
Is worshipped in wonder, fear, and awe
By men, who celebrate with feasts
A king who eats and sleeps with knaves;
A warrior who by dying saves.

His name is used by saints to bless
And used by foul-mouthed louts to curse.
Some wrap Him in religiousness,
Some rage to make the saints disperse.
But ever onward marches He
Who conquers through humility.

A manger in a gloomy barn,
Three crosses on a shrouded hill:
To some an ancient, childish yarn;
But on the throne of Heaven still
The Lamb of God, eternal, true,
The friend of sinners, waits for you.
